Anglian Coins, Whithorn

A group of Anglian Northumbrian silver coins - sceattas and stycas, from the late 8th and early 9th centuries AD.   The collection of coins came from the excavations at Whithorn, and were found in an accumulation of rubbish to one side of the path between a line of halls, possibly for housing pilgrims and guests, and the precinct wall of the monastery. They could have come from regular sweepings-out of the halls, which were remarkably clean and free of finds, or perhaps were casual losses over the years from the pilgrims coming to the healing shrine of St Ninian.
