Holywood Abbey

A plot of the cropmarks noted by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), show parts of the halls, boundaries and graveyard of the medieval monastery of Holywood, surrounding the much later parish church. Recently finds of an Anglo-Saxon Whitby-style strap end, a Northumbrian coins and an unusual, broken decorative plaque indicate that there was an earlier religious centre, probably a monastery of minster, on the site before the medieval one.
