Cross Shaft, Kirkconnel

Anglo-Scandinavian cross shaft from St. Connels, with interlace panels, of 9th to 10th century date. This is the lower part of the shaft, as seen by the unworked base to the left, which would have fitted into a stone socket.   This was found at the old church of St Connel during restoration work in 2005-6. St Connel's has the largest collection of carved stones in the region outside of the major monasteries of Whithorn and Hoddom, indicating the importance of this site, on the border between Nithsdale and Strathclyde, for a number of centuries.
