8th Century Burial Chapel, Whithorn

The 8th century burial chapel at Whithorn during excavations.    Four burials were found within the chapel, the bodies being laid in wooden chests with iron fittings, including locks, which had bee re-used as coffins. The chapel was burnt down in the fire which consumed part of the monastery around the year 845AD. Debris from the collapse of the building showed that it had a roof of wooden shingles (tiles), and a stained glass window on the south wall next to the door.
