Kirkmadrine Stone

On display in the glass fronted porch of Kirkmadrine Burial Chapel is a collection of the oldest Christian monuments outside Whithorn, ranging from the 'Sacerdotes' stone of the late 5th century, shown here, through to Norse crosses of the 12th century   The term 'Sacerdotes' is a latin one for 'Priest', and in the context of this stone suggests that by the end of the 5th century there was an organsised ecclesiastical structure to Christianity in south-west Scotland, some 150 years before Columba's arrival at Iona.
