Cross, Monreith
A high cross from Monreith, this is a classic free-standing
cross of the Whithorn School of sculpture which flourished in the
tenth century. Many of the parishes of the Machars have crosses of
this school, indicating that a parochial structure was
well-established in the area by that time, and furthermore that
Norse patrons were supporting it by commissioning such crosses in a
style which they preferred.
Exaination of Viking finds across all of Scotland has shown that
where they settled, the Norsemen converted to Christianity within
one or two generations of settling.
