Chalk

  Red chalk would be used in a superstitious effort to protect a home or farm from the effects of witchcraft. This practice was seen most often in regions where accusations generally saw the accused being charged with causing animal death, stealing milk from cow's udders, and crop failure. This was often the case in South West Scotland.
