Leather Belt
"Metting the belt" is a form of divination that was not common
to witchcraft lore; however the belt as a form of divination was
seen within Dumfries. In 1654 Katharein Nicolsone gave evidence
against a neighbour. She claimed that he had asked a "wise wife" to
attend to his sick child. The woman "metted the belt" and this
apparently showed that his wife did not care for the child
properly.
In other instances a belt and girdle were said to be used by
witches for fertility practises and for determining the outcome of
an illness.
