Manuscript Order, May 1671

This order states that Elspeth Thomson and another woman, Janet McMuldroch, have been found guilty of witchcraft. Between 2 and 4 o' clock on the afternoon of 18th May 1671 they are to be taken to the execution place, probably at the end of the old bridge in Dumfries. They are then to be wirried (strangled) and burnt at the stake. Both women fell victim to accusations detailing the use of cursing to kill livestock and bewitching neighbours resulting in death and illness over the course of many years.
