The Lowlands, the River Ayr

The river Ayr has helped Ayr's industry flourish over the years. Although formerly named "Inverair" or "Inverayr" meaning, 'mouth of the river Ayr', the town was abbreviated to Ayr. Ayr can be traced back to a pre-Celtic word meaning "watercourse". In 1652, Oliver Cromwell established a large fortress along the mouth of the River Ayr and erected walls around the south of the Rivers mouth- most of these walls remain present to this day.
