Stirling Castle, Stirling

Stirling Castle, except for the outer defence can be dated back to between 1496 and 1583. It was built because King James IV, King James V, King James VI and Queen Mary de Guise wanted a castle, to be built there. A site as important as the castle rock at Stirling, guarding the lowest crossing point of the River Forth, allowed them to protect themselves from this vantage point. The castle has been attacked or besieged at least 16 times.
