The Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers' Bonnet

The Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers organise the Papingo Shoot which has been taking place at Kilwinning Abbey's tower since 1483.   The concentric, coloured circles design on their bonnet copies the round targets that archers fire at when shooting the butts. These are round targets with circles and bullseye. The word butts derives from the practice of using painted wine butt ends as targets.
