John II Silver Penny, Cruggleton Castle

Cruggleton Castle
A silver penny of John II, Count of Hainaut (1247-1304).  Hainaut was a region in Flanders (modern Belgium and Holland).  This coin is from the period 1280-1304.  It was found during the excavations at Cruggleton Castle.   Cruggleton Castle is located on a cliff top overlooking Wigtown Bay.  It has been an important power base for thousands of years and excavation has shown that the site was occupied in the Iron Age, the Dark Ages and again in the Medieval period.  It was one of the centres of the Lords of Galloway.
