Seal matrix (1)

The 'Pelican in her Piety' is a common medieval image and is symbolic of Christ's crucifixion and redemption through sacrifice.  Innermessan, on the shores of Loch Ryan, was the largest settlement in the area.  It was abandoned sometime during the 16th century.  Reginald the Merchant may have been an inhabitant of Innermessan.   A shield-shaped seal matrix with the Latin legend 'S REGINALDI MERCATOR' (the seal of Reginald the Merchant).  Inside the shield is a depiction of the 'Pelican in her Piety', an image of a pelican pecking her breast to feed her chicks with her blood.
