Medieval pot base

This pot base was found by a scallop dredger working the sea bed some five kilometres south of the Mull of Galloway.  How did a medieval jar end up in the North Channel?  Was it lost overboard during a voyage or does it mark the site of a medieval wreck?   The base of a large pot, probably a jug.  The surface is badly eroded and no glaze survives but the vessell is probably a type of pot known as White Gritty Ware.
