Charter of 1425 by Princess Margaret
Charter written in 1425 by Princess Margaret, daughter of Robert II, granting the tolls of the bridge at Dumfries to the monastery of the Greyfriars.
The Greyfriars Monastery was built in 1262 by Franciscan monks on land given to them by Lady Devorgilla Balliol. She was also responsible for the building of the bridge over the Nith. Devorgilla descended from Scottish kings, was the daughter of Alan, Lord of Galloway. In 1233 she married John Balliol of Barnard Castle, County Durham, and became one of the greatest landowners in Europe.
