Pierced hilt left hand dagger
Daggers such as this object were used as both a personal defence
and personal accessory. As defense, they served as off-hand weapons
to block the strike of an opponent in conjunction with rapiers or
single-handed swords. As an accessory, the highly decorated hilts
and blades of these daggers made for eye-catching adornments to the
civilian gentleman. The hilt displays a helix-shaped grip with a
pierced crossguard and fingerloop. The intricate design spills over
to the blade, with filigree designs etched onto the metal,
highlighting its distinctive triangular cross-section.
