Italian left hand dagger
A left hand dagger such as this object would have been used as
off-hand defence in fencing or swordfight to parry the thrusts of
an opponent while the dominant hand wielded a rapier or other,
longer sword. The gilded hilt of the dagger has an S-shaped
crossguard with a thumb loop and terminals decorated in mid-relief,
in the same design as its pommel. The blade has an unadorned
ricasso, with a slighlty off-centre grind line on the double-edged
blade.
