Medieval Sword

This 14th century European war sword was probably captured from a crusader and taken as a trophy to the arsenal at Alexandria. It is a typical Knightly sword of the period. The crossguard is of steel and the drop-shaped pommel of brass. (The pommel is likely to be a replacement). The blade is two-edged and bears an inscription in Arabic just below the crossguard on the unsharpened ricasso. The inscription reads "Bequest of his noble and wise Highness King Shaban to the storehouse of Alexandria in the year A.H. 770 [A.D. 1368/9]". There is also an unidentified maker's mark, a letter "S" inscribed on each face of the blade.
