Bascinet and Camail

An early example of a medieval 'bascinet' or 'basin' helmet.  These would gradually evolve into helmets with visors to protect the face and eyes.  One description of William Wallace has him wearing what is described as a 'steel cap' which may have looked something like this. The steel bascinet is slightly ridged down the centre. The camail attached to its lower edge is lined with leather and there are leather straps which would have fastened around the chin.
