Pitchstone flakes, Mark Farm, Castle Kennedy

Mark Farm, Castle Kennedy
Two flakes of pitchstone.   Pitchstone is a glass-like volcanic stone which is found on Arran.  Flakes of pitchstone have a very sharp cutting edge.  Pitchstone tools are occasionally found at Neolithic settlements in southwest Scotland.   Hundreds of flint tools were found in ploughed fields at Mark Farm in the 1930s.  They mark the site of a fairly large Neolithic settlement.  Many of these flints were collected by local farm workers and given to the local minister, R. G. Anderson.
