Flint adze, Barbae, Stoneykirk

Barbrae, Ardwell, Stoneykirk
A complete flint adze.  The body has been flaked to shape on both sides and the blade has been polished to give a sharp, strong cutting edge.   Adzes, mounted on a wooden shaft, were specialist carpentry tools.  This particular adze is of a type which was being produced in Yorkshire around 2,500BC.  It is the only example to have been found in Dumfries and Galloway.
