Horse trappings, Birrens
Birrens Roman fort
Horse
trappings from Birrens Roman fort.
Cast
bronze mounts, including two harness slides and a terret, recovered
during excavations at the fort. Some objects are probably of local
manufacture, and indicate soldiers adopting local fashions in
relation to harness fittings, a feature noted at a number of Roman
sites in the region.
Some
of the pieces look as if they may come from a native chariot,
perhaps a war trophy?
