Fort & Camps, Tassieholm of Milton

A major Roman military complex (Flavian to Antonine in date) at Milton was excavated between 1938 and 1950 by J. Clarke. The site lies on a sloping ridge, protected by steep banks on three sides, overlooking hte River Annan just south of Beattock, where a series of large Roman marching camps are known. In addition to the forts, fortlets, temporary camps, etc., visible as dark cropmarks on the aerial photograph, he mentions the ditch system of a probable annexe north-west of North Fort 2; and a probable parade ground, an entrenched block-house, and what looks like the corner of a temporary camp, all near the wood towards the north-east of the site
