Roman Camp, Wardlaw
A 3 hectare Roman camp, probably housing two cohorts,
around 1600 men. It could be Flavian (and related to the invasion
of Scotland by Agricola in 79AD), but is more probably Antonine
from the second quarter of the 2nd century AD, with tutulli (small
straight ditches cut across and in front of a gateway to block
direct assault) outside the gates - including four on the northern
side.
Aerial observation in 1976 has shown that this fort is linked to
the native fort to its south (now covered in trees) by a ditch
system broken by a titulum-type entrance. This suggests that
the hill fort was incorporated as a defensive feature for a brief
period, perhaps during Agricola's invasion.
