Boot fragment
This object is what remains of the sole of a soldier's
hob-nailed boot. This fragment is composed of three rusted pegs
used in the construction of the boot. Known as 'caligae' these
boots resemble sandals, and are known for their hardwearing
qualities and simplicity of design.
Barburgh Mill Fortlet
The fortlet at Barburgh Mill was excavated in the 1970s in advance
of its destruction by gravel quarrying. Although on the
Dumfriesshire side of the Nith it is typical of the fortlets found
in Galloway.
