Roman coin hoard
These coins are from a hoard found in the Luce Sands area
in 1998. Wigtownshire during the Roman period was not a
coin using society and hoards of small denomination copper coins
may have been kept to melt down for jewellery. Luce
Sands could have been functioned a a beach market, attracting local
traders and Romano-British merchants from Cumbria and north-west
England.
A mixed collection of 197 Roman coins (a small selection is
shown here) covering the period from around 268AD to the late 4th
century. The coins are very worn and most are unidentifiable
small denomination issues dating to the fourth century.
