Blue glass beads, Whithorn

A group of 'melon beads' of blue glass. The ornamentation is created dragging a metal tool, such as a knife, through the soft glass. If the bead is not heated much after combing, the cuts in the glass produce a multilobed melon bead. A tenth century Arab once wrote that the Vikings would "go to any length to get hold of colored beads".
