Part of Steatite or Soapstone bowl

A piece of rim and wall of a steatite (soapstone) bowl, pierced for suspension. The rounded form matches known complete bowls of 9th - 10th century date from Shetland. No trace of burning is evident to show whether it was intended for use as an oil lamp or a cooking pot.
