Sugar cutters

Food preparation was labour intensive during the Victorian period as all foods were unprocessed and had to be prepared daily. In the days before cubed sugar, refined sugar was made in the form of a large cone called a sugar loaf, which was broken into smaller pieces by sugar cutters. These sugar cutters were manufactured by A. Timmin and Sons. Although cubed sugar became available in the 1840s, sugar loaves were still common until well into the twentieth century.
