Matchbox

Within a few years of the invention of the first friction match, manufacturers Bryant and May of England produced Wax Vestas which were also a friction match, but unlike John Walker's design in 1826, they had a wax stem.   A couple of decades later, safety matches were created when the combustible ingredients were separated between the match and a special striking surface on the box that contained them.   Detail: lid - BRYANT & MAY'S / ROYAL WAX VESTAS / MADE IN ENGLAND interior - BRYANT & MAY'S / ROYAL WAX VESTAS
