Flemish small sword 1
Small swords such as this Flemish example flourished around the
17th century and carried into the 18th century as a fashion
accessory for gentleman. Following on from the larger and more
cumbersome rapier, the small sword provided a visual shorthand for
wealth, masculinity, power, and prowess to anyone who may see the
weapon and wearer.
This 18th century small sword features an entirely chiselled
hilt, with small faces and figures peeking out from amongst the
foliate ornamentation. The blade is also artfully etched, with both
geometric and scrolled designs.
