Transitional rapier 4

Ornate swords such as this object were popular dress swords for civilian gentlemen as part of their everyday wardrobe. Although they could be used for defensive purposes, the main purpose of a beautifully crafted rapier was to denote the rank and wealth of its wearer. This object is a transitional rapier, which is characterised by its smaller hilt and blade that were better suited for thrusting than cutting.   This Toledo-made rapier features an ornate hilt, with pierced foliate elements across the guard, grip and pommel.  The blade bears several etched markings. Along the length of the fuller, the blade is inscribed with '[Illegible] en Toledo', a running wolf etching and a crescent moon directly beneath the fuller.
