Swept hilt rapier 3

The rapier sword was both a stylish accessory and weapon of self-defence used by civilian and military gentlemen through out the 16th and 17th century. This rapier has a swept hilt design to protect an unarmoured users hand.   The overall hilt is highly decorated with a chisselled elaborate spiral design covering the gilded pommel, knuckleguard, terminals and quillions. The swords grip design is spiral and pleated.   The ricasso part of the blade is stamped with spurious marks a small cross above and a 'B' in a shield surmounted by a crown.
