Italian swept hilt rapier 1

The swept hilt on this 17th century Italian sword is as elegant as it is protective. The complex handguards were designed to protect the wielding hand during combat. The handguard and pommel are decorated with chiselled circular designs with bud-shaped terminals on the guard and quillon. The wooden grip has wire sailor's knot detailing at its top and bottom. The ricasso of the blade bears maker's two marks etched on to the metal.
