Cup hilt rapier 3
The cup hilt rapier continued to be carried by civilians in
Italy and Spain until the end of the 18th century. This
17th century rapier features an ornately decorated hilt
with gilded accents and pierced elements. The pommel, cup, and
crossguard terminals have Classical figures chiselled onto the
metalwork and panels with foliate decoration. The wire-wrapped grip
is figured in a helix formation with sailor's knot braiding at the
top and bottom. The blade is undecorated. It has a fuller in the
top section of its length and a small maker's mark etched below
this upper channel.
