Five-flanged mace
Maces and other blunt instruments were common sights on the
Medieval and Early Modern battlefield, being fairly cheap to
requiring little specialist skill to produce. This made them
popular for use amongst infantrymen, with longer hafted instruments
being used in cavalry. However, in modern times, maces are often
seen in use for civic ceremonies such as parliamentary or formal
academic functions.
This mace is of Italian origin and is composed entirely of
steel. It has 5 pierced flanges with a flat back to the mace's
head. The haft is ornately decorated with vegetable and floral
designs with criss-crossing stems on a hammered ground.
