Chassepot bayonet
Brass-handled bonet for the Chassepot breechloading rifle, also
known by its official title 'Fusil modèle 1866'. A
bayonet is a knife designed to be fit on the muzzle of a firearm,
converting the range rifle into a spear that could be used in close
combat by infantry soldiers.
Inscription on flat edge of blade near hilt: "…. Des chat
… 1871". The chassepot is famous for being arm of French forces
during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871.
