MOUNCEY, William (1852 - 1901)

William Mouncey was a native of Kirkcudbright and the town and area was the subject of nearly all of his paintings. He was a self-taught artist and did not commit himself full-time to painting until the age of 36.   He was married to Hornel's sister and his work was influenced by his brother-in-law although he retained a distinct style of his own.   Like most of the artists associated with the Kirkcudbright School he was interested in the decorative aspects of painting but more than most of them he was particularly interested in capturing atmosphere and weather effects in his paintings.
