HENRY, George (1858 - 1943)

George Henry was born in Ayrshire and studied in Glasgow where he became acquainted with several of the Glasgow Boys. In 1885 he met E. A. Hornel who invited him to paint with him in Kirkcudbright. For the next few years Henry made several painting trips to Kirkcudbright where he painted many successful paintings of the surrounding Galloway landscape. It was here that he painted his most significant work A Galloway Landscape (Glasgow Museums) - a work which has been described as the most original painting produced by the Glasgow Boys. The painting, very rich in colour and decorative qualities fits very much within the Kirkcudbright School. Henry did not settle in Kirkcudbright, after his trip to Japan with Hornel he turned increasingly to portraiture and settled in London.
