Portincross Castle

Portincross Castle was built by the Boyd family around an existing one storey fortified house built by the de Ross family. The Boyds were given the lands by Robert the Bruce for their support at Bannockburn. The red sandstone castle commands an enviable defensive position with 3 sides facing the sea. Just a short distance from the castle, out to sea, lies the wreck of one of the galleons that made up the Spanish Armada, which sank here while caught in high winds, fleeing the English Navy in the 16th Century.
