Loudoun Castle (West Front), Galston

Many buildings which bear the name 'castle' resemble the medieval fortresses of old only in name, and many such as Loudoun Castle were built much later (1804-11) as comfortable stately homes. Loudoun was a particularly palacial one and was dubbed 'The Windsor of the North'. The house has lain as an empty shell since 1941 when it was gutted by fire as it served as accomodation for Belgian soldiers.
