Knocking Stane and Beetle

The knocking stane and beetle consists of a stone vessel - the knocking stane, and a wooden masher - the beetle. They were used for grinding barley or oatmeal into a fine flour which was used to make bannocks (large rough scones). Bannocks were more commonly eaten in Scotland than bread.
