Iron objects from Castledykes, Kirkcudbright

A sample of finds from the 1911-1913 excavations of the site of the Royal castle at Kirkcudbright, including iron tools and structural hardware.   The castle at Castledykes, Kirkcudbright is thought to have been built by Alexander III in 1264.  It is first mentioned in records in 1288 when John Comyn is mentioned as guardian of the castle.  During the Wars of Independence it was under the control of John Balliol and Edward I.  Edward used Kirkcudbright as a supply port for this campaigns in Galloway in 1300.  The castle was probably dismantled by Edward Bruce in the early 14th century, as part of his campaign in Galloway for his brother, Robert the Bruce (Robert I).
