Dunure Castle

MacKay's depiction of Dunure Castle set against a stormy sky contrasts strongly with Sir D. Y. Cameron's who paints the castle in sunshine, against a dead calm sea. The artist James MacKay was from a long established Kilmarnock family. His brother Alexander was also a painter and is perhaps best remembered for his portraits. James preferred to paint landscapes and although he eventually settled in Edinburgh, he produced many paintings of Ayrshire scenes, a number of which belong to the collections in East Ayrshire.
