Doon Castle Interior and Door

Although only the bottom storey of Doon Castle survives, you can still see the impressive stonework upon which the odd mason’s mark can still be found. What looks like a window in this picture was actually a strong door. There are holes on either side which would have held the bar which acted as a lock and also strengthened it. The castle originally stood on an island in the middle of the loch that you can see through the doorway, but was moved in the 20th century when the level of the water was raised as part of a hydro-electric programme. The original foundations are visible upon an island in the loch when the water is low.
