Doon Castle Doorway from Interior

The main gateway of Doon Castle. This strong doorway would have been protected by an iron or wooden portcullis, the grooves for which are still visible. It is alledged that Robert the Bruce sought refuge here when one of his early campaigns in Galloway went badly for him.  It is known however that one of Bruce's friends Alexander Seton fled here pursued by English troops.  The castle was taken and Seton was captured.  It would have been attacked by boat as it originally stood on an island in the centre of Loch Doon.  the castle was moved during the 20th Century to it's present location on the banks of the Loch as the water level was raised as part of a hydro-electric scheme.
