Altarpiece Tapestry (2)
This splendid tapestry was made in the low countries, probably Brussels around 1480. It is a very fine example of the work of the famous tapestry weavers of that city and the design was produced by a painter 'The Master of St. Gudule'.
It consists of three panels depicting the nativity. The first shows the Angel appearing to Mary, the second, Mary and Joseph worshipping the baby Jesus and the shepherds arriving at the stable and the third shows the Magi bringing gifts to the baby Jesus.
The frame is carved from wood, gilded and painted and bears the coat of arms of the Flemish family 'de Raet'.
