Stone axe, Cairnpat

Cairnpat, Portpatrick
A stone axe with a damaged butt.  The axe has been ground and polished and polishing lines - parallel striations - can be seen on the surface of the stone.  The asymmetrical shape of the axe suggests it has been reused and reworked. We know from the rock that this axe was made at a specialist workshop in the Lake District.  Axes made there were traded across the Solway into Dumfries and Galloway.
