Moss used as toilet paper, Whithorn

The waterlogged areas of the excavation at Whithorn uncovered preserved 'sheets' of moss, which had been discarded. Closer analysis revealed them to be studded with fragments of hazel nut shells, and blackberry pips. In keeping with  similar finds from York, these may represent 'sheets' used to clean up after a visit to a latrine pit.
